FRANKFURT, Nov 3
(AFP) - 17h10 - A Turk suspected of having been one
of the leaders in Europe of the outlawed Kurdish
Workers Party (PKK) went on trial here on Thursday
on charges of "belonging to a criminal
organisation."
The 48-year-old man, identified only as Hasan A.,
was arrested at Frankfurt international airport on
February 3.
According to the charge sheet, he belonged to the
PKK leadership in Europe from April 1999 to June
2001, operating under the code name "Ferhan".
He is also accused of forgery and bringing Turkish
illegal immigrants into Germany in the trial, which
is expected to last about six days.
The PKK is considered a terrorist organisation by
Ankara, the European Union and the United States.
Its rebels' bloody separatist struggle in
southeastern Turkey has claimed nearly 37,000 lives
since 1984.
