Similar crimes 'taking place
on vast scale'
HONOUR-based violence is happening in Britain on
a vast scale and must be stopped, an expert has
claimed.
Such crimes can involve false imprisonment,
abduction, rape, men and women being forced into
unwanted marriages, or in extreme cases, murders.
"This murder (of Mr Ghorbani Zarin) fits the
definition of an 'honour killing' absolutely," said
Jasvinder Sangher, herself a victim of honour crime
who is now studying for a PhD at Derby University.
"Honour-based violence is going on in Britain on a
vast scale. We are just beginning to scratch the
surface," she said.
Heshu Yones's father Abdalla Yones, 48, an Iraqi
Kurd, was unable to tolerate his 16-year-old
daughter's Westernised lifestyle and her
relationship with a Lebanese Christian man. He
stabbed his daughter 17 times at their London home
in October 2002 and was jailed for life after
pleading guilty to murder.
Twenty-two-year-old Zafar Iqbal was strangled to
death in 2003 in a Bradford car park after his
relationship with 21-year-old Rizwana Arif provoked
outrage in her family. Tariq Mahmood, who came to
Oldham from Pakistan in 1999, was last year jailed
for 19-and-a-half years after admitting the killing.
She was promised to his brother.
Eight relatives of murdered 17-year-old Shafilea
Ahmed, a former Bradford resident, were given police
bail for a third time earlier this year while
investigations continue into her death. Miss Ahmed
went missing in September 2003 after a holiday to
Pakistan where she refused an arranged marriage. She
was found murdered in January 2004 in the River Kent
at Sedgwick, Cumbria.
Rukshana Naz, a 19-year-old from Derby, was killed
in 1998 by her mother and brother after she fell
pregnant to her childhood sweetheart.
The teenager refused her family's demands to abort
the child. Her body was found dumped in West
Yorkshire. Shakeela Naz, 45, and Shazad Naz, 22,
were jailed for life.
Kalwinder Dosanjh, 51, a Sikh, was last year jailed
for 14 years for soliciting murder after hiring an
assassin to shoot his 22-year-old daughter Sanjit
Dosanjh and her Jewish boyfriend Temple Jazac after
they ran away to his home city of Sheffield.
