KIRKUK, Kurdistan-Iraq (AP) - A Sunni Kurd
cleric from this northern city was kidnapped,
tortured and killed during a recent visit to the
Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a Sunni religious official
said here Tuesday.
Sheik Bashir Hadi Fakhreddine, the imam of Bilal al-Habashi
mosque in Kirkuk, was kidnapped 10 days ago in
eastern Baghdad along with his friend Seif Abdullah,
according to Sheik Azad Khorsheed of the Sunni
Endowment in Kirkuk.
Khorsheed said Fakhreddine was in Baghdad on his was
to the Gulf nation of Bahrain where he planned to
represent Iraq in an Islamic conference.
Khorsheed said the bodies of the cleric and
Abdullah, a member of the Iraqi Islamic Party, were
found dead in Baghdad Monday with marks of tortures
on their bodies as well as bullet wounds in the
head.
The kidnapping and killing of Sunni Arab clerics is
not uncommon in Iraq and Sunni officials have blamed
Shiite militias for these killings. Such attacks
against Kurdish clerics are not as common.
