Kurdistan Regional Government Agrees on
Establishing an Official Customs Center in
Sulaimaniyah Airport under Central Administration
Baghdad (Iraq), Nov 6 - Official
sources informed Al Sharq Al Awsat that Kurdistan
regional government has approved to establish a
customs center in Sulaimaniyah International
Airport, which would be run on behalf of the central
government.
The sources added that this approval came after long
deliberations between the representatives of central
ministries, including finance, transport and trade
ministries, and Kurdistan regional government (Sulaimaniyah
Administration), which has supported the idea as it
is very beneficial for the region and would activate
the trade movement there.
The sources added that the center would handle the
affairs of arriving and departing travelers to and
from Iraq, in addition to the customs procedures
relating to the imported and exported items.
The sources pointed out that the regional government
used to impose customs fees without referral to the
central laws that regulate the process of imposing
taxes on goods, etc. Moreover, launching this center
at Sulaimaniyah International Airport would be very
beneficial for the region, as most of the travel
procedures would be handled there, which means
activating the trade and tourist activities in the
northern regions, in addition to the possibility of
attracting transportation contracts from several
countries that contracted the Iraqi party.
Speed would also be achieved in transporting goods,
which used to take longer time when imported through
Jordanian, Syrian and other airports.
