Baghdad – In a
statement to reporters, Dr. Mohamed Al Aboudi,
general manger of the Iraqi oil derivatives
distribution company, disclosed the reasons for the
aggravation of the gasoline crisis, once again.
He added that the reasons are not relating to
distribution, but are attributed to the fact that
Iraq's State Oil Marketing Company (SOMO) is delayed
in paying off the due amounts for the Turkish and
Kuwaiti parties.
He pointed out that the ministry managed to pay a
portion of the sums to both parties and the ships
started to load oil derivatives to be exported to
Iraq. He pointed out that the oil derivatives
distribution company resembles a foodstuffs agent
that receives foodstuffs quotas to distribute them
to citizens. The company is doing the same thing
through distributing imported and local products.
He noted that the company has used up the reserve
quantities of gasoline in its warehouses after the
Turkish and Kuwaiti companies refrained from supply
as the bills were not paid, according to the Emirati
Al Bayan newspaper.
Meanwhile, Kurdistan regional government has created
an investigation committee for investigating on the
disappearance of 23 million liters of kerosene from
citizens' quotas in Al Sulaimaniyah. The independent
Kurdish Hawlati newspaper stated that the
investigation committee, headed by Mohamed Kirdaghi,
Secretary-General of the ministers' council, would
investigate on the reasons for the disappearance of
great amounts of kerosene and thousands of tons of
asphalt.
He said that he suspects the involvement of a number
of officials in this process and that they are
currently under investigation. The newspaper quoted
a knowledgeable source, who preferred anonymity,
saying, "The government considered it more likely
that the great amount of gasoline has been smuggled
to a neighboring country. This has led the central
government in Baghdad to participate in the
investigation.
It is worth mentioning that the fuel crisis,
especially the kerosene, which is used in heating
homes, has started last summer. This has lead to a
great rise in the prices of kerosene in the black
market.
