Baghdad - The Iraqi National Communications
and Media Commission has announced launching the
Iraqi suffix (.iq) on the International Electronic
Network (Internet).
In a press conference, Dr. Siamand Othman, director
of the commission, said, "This event is considered
as a symbolic, noticeable and significant for the
Iraqi nation." He added, "The number of Internet
users has evidently increased, but slowly. It has
increased from 12500 users in 2001 to approximately
120000 in 2004." Othman expected that Iraq would
witness an increase of 500% in using the Internet."
He pointed out, "Now, Iraq would officially lift its
flag in the electronic space through retrieving the
authority of legal and technical protection for its
electronic symbol (suffix), which would include all
Iraqi websites and e-mails." |

significant for the efforts exerted by the Iraqi
communications ministry for activating and
developing the sector of communications." She added,
"It is a very significant step for the national
identity that the governmental companies and
institutions, and the educational institutions prove
their Iraqi loyalty, which would show investors that
Iraq is participating in the future of developed
technology."
