Turkey Kurdistan News - in Brief 20.10.2005

Meeting with Ocalan stopped again

NEWSDESK, Oct 19 - The lawyer of the Kurdish national leader Abdullah Ocalan and two human rights observers were stopped by Turkish military authorities from visiting Ocalan on Wednesday.

The lawyer Ibrahim Bilmez and the human rights observers Ayse Batumlu and Muharrem Erbey were on their way on a Turkish military ferry boat to the island of Imrali when the soldiers suddenly turned back giving the lawyers the reason that the boat was damaged. Soldiers from the Gemlik Gendarmerie Commandership, responsible for the transport to and from the Imrali Special Type Closed Military Prison on the island of Imrali, have given the same reason to Ocalan's lawyers before, returning them halfway from the island.

The Kurdish national leader Abdullah Ocalan has not been allowed to meet his lawyers since July 1, 2005.

Two Kurds in Viransehir imprisoned for membership in the PKK

NEWSDESK, Oct 19 - Two Kurds have been imprisoned in the city of Viransehir in the province of Urfa in Kurdistan (southeastern Turkey) for membership in the Kurdish resistance movement PKK.

The arrested Kurds, Abdurrahim Attila and Abbas Turgut, were sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Viransehir Judicature for being members in the Kurdish resistance movement PKK and 'winning over people to an illegal organization [PKK]'.

Attila and Turgut were sent to the Viransehir Closed Prison.

Signature campaign started for Ocalan in Mersin

NEWSDESK, Oct 19 - The Kurdish political activist organization 'Free Citizen Initiative' in Mersin has started a signature campaign called 'I accept the Kurdish national leader Abdullah Ocalan as my political volition'. 75,000 people in Mersin are believed to contribute with their signatures.

Upon completion, the signatures will be sent to the European Parliament, the United Nations, the chairman of the Turkish parliament, the Turkish president Ahmet Necdet Sezer and the Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"Turkey, who claims to be a state of law, must prove this. Political solutions must now be prioritized and not military. The campaign started for Mr. Ocalan will create a new political sphere and it will be Turkey's venting pipe", the Kurdish activist and the initiative taker Saadet Kuran said.

The 'Free Citizen Initiative' is a Kurdish political activist organization that has chapters all over Turkey and Kurdistan (southeastern Turkey).
