DIYARBAKIR,
Kurdistan (Turkey), Oct 31 (AFP) - 8h26 - Three
Kurdish militants and a Turkish soldier were killed
overnight in a clash in mainly Kurdish southeastern
Turkey, officials said Monday.
The fighting occurred in a rural area in the
province of Bingol, the sources said, adding that a
security operation against the rebel Kurdistan
Workers' Party (PKK) in the region was continuing.
The Kurdish conflict in Turkey has claimed some
37,000 lives since 1984 when the PKK, considered a
terrorist group by Ankara as well as the European
Union and the United States, took up arms for
Kurdish self-rule in the southeast.
Violence in the region significantly escalated this
year after the PKK called off a five-year unilateral
ceasefire in June 2004.
