DIYARBAKIR,
Turkey, Oct 14 (AFP) - 19h07 - Two Turkish soldiers
were killed and another two were wounded Friday in
separate attacks by armed Kurdish rebels in the
southeast of the country, local security sources
said.
One soldier was killed when paramilitary gendarmerie
troops came under fire from rebels of the outlawed
Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the province of
Hakkari, which borders Iran and Iraq, the local
governor's office said.
A non-commissioned officer was killed when a
remote-controlled landmine was detonated as his
vehicle was passing near Lice town in Diyarbakir
province, the sources said.
In a separate incident, two soldiers were wounded
when they came under PKK fire during a security
sweep in the countryside near Lice.
The PKK, considered a terrorist group by Ankara as
well as the United States and the European Union,
has waged a bloody campaign for self-rule in
Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast since 1984 in a
conflict that has claimed some 37,000 lives since.
Unrest in the region has escalated after the PKK
called off a five-year unilateral ceasefire in June
2004.
Most recently, the rebels proclaimed a six-week
ceasefire until October 3 which they called off last
week.
Both ceasefires were brushed aside by the Turkish
army and clashes in the region continue.
