DIYARBAKIR,
Kurdistan-Turkey, Oct 12 (AFP) - 9h08 - Five Turkish
soldiers were killed and another was injured
Wednesday in a clash with armed Kurdish militants in
the mainly Kurdish eastern province of Tunceli,
local security sources said.
The fighting erupted near the village of Cirali, the
sources said but were unable to provide further
details.
A security operation was underway to hunt down the
rebels from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
The PKK, considered a terrorist group by Ankara as
well as the United States and the European Union,
has waged a bloody campaign for self-rule in
Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast since 1984 in a
conflict that has claimed some 37,000 lives since.
Unrest in the region has escalated after the PKK
called off a five-year unilateral ceasefire in June
2004.
Most recently, the rebels proclaimed a six-week
ceasefire until October 3 which they called off last
week.
Both ceasefires were brushed aside by the Turkish
army and clashes in the region continue.
Three Turks wounded in landmine blasts
Oct 11 (AFP) - 20h54 - Three civilians were wounded
Tuesday in separate landmine explosions blamed on
Kurdish separatist extremists, the Anatolia news
agency reported.
An 11-year-old boy sustained serious injuries when a
mine he found while grazing sheep in Agri province
in the east exploded in his hand.
A 30-year-old man had his leg blown off when he
stepped on a mine while returning home from his
field in the southeastern province of Sirnak, which
borders Syria and Iraq.
In the eastern Van province, a 43-year-old shepherd
stepped on a landmine while returning to his village
after grazing sheep. Details of his injuries were
not reported.
Antolia said the landmines were believed to have
been planted by rebels of the outlawed Kurdistan
Workers' Party (PKK), which has waged a separatist
campaign for Kurdish self-rule in the southeast of
Turkey since 1984.
The rebels are also suspected of being behind a bomb
blast in the city of Hakkari early Tuesday, which
caused property damage but no casualties.
The bomb, planted in the car of a municipal worker,
went off in the early hours, damaging two other
vehicles and shattering the windows of nearby
buildings.
The PKK, considered a terrorist group by Ankara, the
United States and the European Union, is active in
the region and has been blamed for similar attacks
in the past.
The group called off a six-week unilateral ceasefire
with Ankara last week.
