ISTANBUL, Oct 3 (AFP)
- 12h25 - A pro-Kurdish demonstrator was killed by
police fire after a protest in Istanbul degenerated
into a riot, local media reported Monday.
A group of about 80 supporters of the banned
Kurdistan Workers' Partyhad gathered Sunday in a
working-class area of western Istanbul and shouted
slogans backing the PKK and its jailed leader
Abdullah Ocalan.
The PKK is regarded by the Turkish government, the
European Union and the United States as a terrorist
organisation.
Police intervened and the demonstrators began
smashing car and shop windows and throwing sticks,
stones and petrol bombs, newspapers reported.
They opened fire after an officer was struck on the
head by a petrol bomb. A 25-year old demonstrator
was hit four times in the chest and died in
hospital. A youth of 15 was hit in the leg, one
newspaper said.
