DIYARBAKIR,
Turkey, Oct 3 (AFP) - 10h01 - Four policemen were
injured in a bomb blast in the southeastern Turkish
province of Hakkari blamed on armed Kurdish rebels,
local security officials said Monday.
The injured officers were investigating a bomb blast
late Sunday near residential apartment blocks in the
province's Yuksekova town, several kilometres
(miles) from the Iranian border.
A second bomb exploded as they were investigating
the scene, the sources said.
The blasts, which caused extensive damage to nearby
buldings, were blamed on the outlawed Kurdistan
Workers' Party (PKK) which has stepped up
anti-government violence in recent months.
In another incident, one soldier was injured when
PKK rebels using rocket launchers attacked the
gendarmerie headquarters in the province's Muradiye
town late Sunday, security sources said.
An operation was underway to hunt down the rebels.
The PKK, considered a terrorist organization by
Ankara as well as the United States and the European
Union, has waged a bloody separatist campaign in
Turkey's eastern and southeastern provinces since
1984. The conflict has claimed some 37,000 lives.
Unrest in the region has markedly escalated in
recent months after the PKK called off a five-year
unilateral ceasefire in June 2004.
The rebels proclaimed a six-week ceasefire until
October 3, but the army has brushed this aside and
clashes in the region continue.
