Saddam owned two
palaces in France

Iraqi sources in Paris confirmed to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat
press reports that former Iraqi president Saddam
Hussein and his family owned two large palaces on
the French Riviera. One palace in Cannes is
estimated at 10 million euros. The second palace is
in Gras, which is considered the perfume capital of
France.

Jafari: Government will provide security at
polling stations

Iraqi prime minister Ibrahim al-Jafari met with members of the Iraqi
Independent Electoral Commission to discuss the
upcoming referendum on the Iraqi constitution, which
is scheduled for October 15. Farid Ayar, a media
analyst and commission member, said Jafari promised
the government would provide security at polling
stations on voting day. Jafari said he would contact
the ministries of interior and defense to handle
security procedures. Jafari also promised that the
government would help the electoral commission
successfully carry out a democratic voting process
but would not interfere in its affairs.

Survey finds 80 per cent of Iraqis support the
draft constitution

A survey by the Iraqi Center for International
Development and Dialogue found that 80 per cent of
those polled supported the draft constitution. Ten
per cent opposed to it, and 10 per cent did not
respond to the questionnaire. The organization,
which surveyed Iraqis in 15 of the country's 18
governorates in mid-September, found support for the
constitution varied by region. Support was reported
as follows: Kurdish regions, 93 per cent; south, 91
per cent; central, 53 per cent; Baghdad 53 per cent.

Iraqi forces raid Sunni leader's office

Salih Mutlak, spokesman for the National Dialogue
Council and a member of the Iraqi Constitutional
Committee, reported Wednesday that Iraqi forces
raided his office, injuring two guards. In a phone
call to Agence France-Presse, he said the forces
raided his office in the western Baghdad
neighbourhood of Jamia Tuesday evening. He did not
give any details. A source from the Iraqi Interior
Ministry confirmed the raid but also did not give
details.

Arab League delegation to visit Iraq Saturday

An Arab League source said Wednesday that a
delegation led by the assistant secretary-general
for political affairs, Ahmed Bin Hilli, will visit
Baghdad Saturday. The source, who wished to remain
anonymous, told the Kuwaiti News Agency that Hilli
will meet with Iraqi groups in preparation for the
Arab League's national reconciliation conference in
Iraq.
