Iraqi Communists say
yes to constitution
(Azzaman)
The Iraqi Communist Party has called on its members
and the public to vote for the constitution in the
October 15 referendum. The party's central committee
said in a statement that an endorsement would mark
the first ever Iraqi constitution to be ratified by
public referendum.

Still room for constitutional changes
(Al-Taakhi)
Iraqi member of parliament Abdulkhaliq Zangana, a
member of the Kurdistan Alliance, has said there is
still room for negotiations on Iraq's draft
constitution that could help all parties endorse the
document. He said Kurdish and Sunni leaders had
discussed three amendments to appease the Sunnis,
including making Arabic an official language in the
Kurdish territories and ensuring the unity of Iraq.
He did not elaborate on the other possible
amendments, but said the proposals would reassure
"our Sunni Arab brothers".

Iraq and Jordan agree to combat terror, organised
crime
(Al-Mutamar)
Iraq and Jordan have signed an agreement to fight
terrorism and organised crime. Jordanian Interior
Minister Awni Yarfas and his Iraqi counterpart Bayan
Jabir Solagh signed the pact, which also included a
transport agreement, after talks in Jordan on
October 2. Speaking at a press conference, the two
ministers stressed the need to strengthen relations
and improve security cooperation between the
countries to protect the security and stability of
Iraq. Solagh also denied discussing the possible
hand-over of former Iraqi defence minister Hazim
Shalan, who has been accused of corruption and
currently lives in Jordan.

Registration extended for international vote
monitors
(Iraq al-Yawm)
The Independent Election Commission for Iraq is
extending the registration period for international
voting monitors observing the referendum until
October 10. Director Adil al-Lami said the
commission has received many requests from
international monitoring teams and needs more time
to register their organisations. He said their
watchdog role would give international legitimacy to
the referendum.
