Sulaimaniyah,
Kurdistan (Iraq) 24 October 2005: KurdishMedia.com
learnt that Mr Fatah Zakholi, the minister of
culture in the Sulemani PUK administration, has
resigned.
The reason for his resignation was that he did not
approve of the Iraqi constitution because it did not
grant the people of Kurdistan the right to self
determination. He was also active in the Kurdistan
Referendum Movement which issued a communiqué before
the 15 October 2005 referendum on the constitution,
urging people of Kurdistan to vote no for the
constitution.
The PUK did not approved of a minister who steps out
of the main stream policy of the party and asked Mr
Zakholi to resign.
Both PUK and KDP utilise all their resources to
convince the people of Kurdistan to vote ‘yes’ for
the constitution. However, the constitution has been
very controversial and it has been widely reported
in the local media that youths of Kurdistan did not
take part in the referendum. Imad Ahmad, the high
ranking member of the PUK, described this in the
local media as “a matter of concern”.
