A
ceremony to dedicate a school playground built by
Korean troops stationed in Kurdistan (Iraq)
was held on Oct. 19 with the attendance of Maj. Gen.
Chung Seung-jo, commander of the Korean forces in
Iraq, and some 520 local children and adults,
including the head of the village Karabadro.
The playground was built by the 12th Civil Affairs
Brigade, part of the Zaytun unit positioned in Irbil,
Kurdistan (Iraq's northern region) inhabited by
Kurds. Some 300 soldiers participated in the
playground construction project.
Following the ceremony, a Taekwondo demonstration by
Iraqi children and a performance of a traditional
Korean masked folk dance by Korean soldiers were
presented to add to the festive mood at Karabadro, a
small town.
The brigade's operation, however, has modified the
village into a refurbished village with improved
sanitation conditions and sufficient power supply.
Besides the construction of a school playground, the
brigade also donated a generator, blackboards,
books, benches and stoves for a school.
In a speech at the ceremony, brigade commander Col.
Lee Moon-seok expressed his hope that the playground
will give children "a place of hope."
