York, 31 Oct. (AKI) - The senior United Nations
envoy to Iraq, Ashraf Qazi, has been meeting senior
figures in Baghdad and Kirkuk to discuss the results
of the recent constitutional referendum. Qazi met
with prime minister, Ibrahim Jaafari, for
discussions focussed on the referendum and also the
Arab League initiative for a national reconciliation
conference in Iraq.
The envoy also travelled to Kirkuk (Kurdistan-Iraq),
where he separately met governor Abdulrahman Mustaga
and representatives of the Kirkuk Brotherhood List
and the Shiite, Sunni, Turkoman and Christian
communities.
"He discussed with them the latest political
developments in Iraq, the referendum results, the
forthcoming elections and the situation in Kirkuk,"
the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said.
During these talks the envoy emphasized the
importance of an inclusive participatory process
among all communities in the region. Governor
Mustafa and community representatives shared their
special concerns with him, and spoke of Kirkuk's
importance for the country, according to the
mission.
"They all sought the help of the United Nations and
expressed their appreciation for its efforts, and
the desire for more UN engagement in their region,"
UNAMI said.
