BAGHDAD, Oct. 11
(UPI) - Saddam Hussein goes on trial next week in a
heavily guarded courtroom in Baghdad's Green Zone,
The Washington Times reports.
Citing a source close to the Iraqi Special Tribunal,
the newspaper said that the trial is set to begin
Oct. 19. The first day will include a formal
identification of the defendants -- Saddam and seven
of his top aides -- and a laying out of the charges.
"This is a very complicated case, and there is a lot
to do," the source said. |

The tribunal is still trying to work out the
details, including how much of the proceedings will
be covered live on television and whether judges'
and witnesses' names will be used. Iraqi insurgents
have targeted people involved with the prosecution
of Saddam.
The first trial involves the 1982 massacre of 143
Shiites from the town of Dujail, which followed an
attempt to assassinate Saddam. Saddam faces
execution if he is convicted.
