Mahabad,
Kurdistan (Iran) Oct 27 - Several Kurds in
Mahabad were injured, two of them seriously, when
Kurdish protesters clashed with Iranian security
forces at the 'Liberty Square' in central Mahabad in
eastern Kurdistan (northwestern Iran) on Wednesday.
500 people, the majority of them youth, gathered at
the 'Liberty Square' to demand the release of
Kurdish prisoners captured by Iranian security
forces during the big riots ignited by the murder of
Shivane Qadri by Iranian soldiers back in July.
Among the imprisoned Kurds is the 22-year-old
Mistefa Resulniya, who the Iranian government has
accused of killing an Iranian soldier named Cengcu.
Kurdish prisoners in the Urmiye Prison have reported
that Resulniya was tortured severely by the Urmiye
prison authorities. Capital punishment has been
requested for Resulniya by the Iranian prosecutor in
Urmiye.
Tension rose upon the arrival of Iranian security
forces and the situation escalated into a clash at
the square between soldiers and protesters. Injuries
were reported from both sides and two young Kurds
were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Their
current condition is unknown.
The situation is still tense in the city, the
Kurdish news agency ANF's correspondent in Mahabad
reports.
