Cellular Phones: We Spent $250 for Establishing our
Network in Iraq
London - Asiacell for cellular phones in Iraq
has announced that the number of its subscribers in
the north of Iraq and Baghdad has reached 1 million
and 300 thousand.
Farouq Mustafa Rasoul, chairman of Asiacell, told Al
Sharq Al Awsat that the number of subscribers only
in Baghdad has reached approximately 200 thousand
and that the company is expecting to gain 300
thousand more subscribers in the coming three
months.
Farouq Rasoul stated, "The company is continuing its
expansions towards the center and south of Iraq, as
in a few days service would be activated in Al
Basra, where the number of subscribers is expected
to reach approximately 300 thousand. The daily rate
of the number of subscribers in Asiacell cellular
phone services in Kurdistan (north of Iraq) is 10000
subscribers a day." |

Farouq Rasoul added, "During the period of executing
the project, which was signed with the Iraqi
telecommunications ministry in 2003 for establishing
a network for cellular phone services in the Iraqi
northern provinces, the company has spent more than
250 million dollars."
Farouq added, "The company is currently offering the
lowest rate for cellular phone calls in Iraq;
9c/minute. It is worth noting that during the
blessed month of Ramadan, Asiacell is having a
special offer of selling the cellular phone line for
$25, in addition to adding a $25 value to the line,
which means that the line is for free.
In response to a question by Al Sharq Al Awsat on
the intention of the company to offer underwriting,
Farouq Mustafa Rasoul, the company chairman, denied
that the company has any intention for offering
underwriting in the near future.
It is worth mentioning that Asiacell, whose majority
of shares is owned by Iraqi investors, has won a
contract for establishing cellular phone service in
Iraqi northern provinces, such as Tikrit, Kirkuk, Al
Musel, Erbil, Al Sulaimaniyah and Dahuk in 2003. The
company share of the project is 51%, while the
Kuwaiti National Telecommunications owns 40% and the
United Gulf Bank owns 9%.
