Erbil, Kurdistan
(Iraq) - A navigation official in Iraqi Kurdistan
region has announced the arrival of the first flight
from London to Erbil on 27.October.2005, with 80
passengers on board of a plane belonging to the
Greek company of Alexandra.
Kwa Bisarani, chairman of the Kurdish company of
Sawan, said, "Launching the direct line has come as
a result of efforts exerted on behalf of the company
and the transportation ministry of the regional
government in Erbil, with the assistance of the
Iraqi transportation ministry in Baghdad."
Bisarani pointed out that his company "would run
weekly flights between the airports of Erbil,
London, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Amsterdam, in
addition to Athens.' He pointed out that these
flights are direct and do not go through Baghdad
International Airport.
On his behalf, Haydar Sheikh Ali, minister of
transportation in Erbil regional government said
that his ministry is doing its best with the
aviation companies in Erbil for reducing the prices
of tickets. He added, "We hope to work with aviation
companies for specifying suitable fares in the
future."
Within the same context, the minister confirmed, "A
delegation from the Austrian Airlines would arrive
in Erbil tomorrow (today), for discussing running
flights between Erbil airport and Vienna in the near
future." He pointed out that the first plane that
belongs to Sawan Company would arrive in Erbil
airport coming from Stockholm today.
