A shadow is on its way: By Nebez Goran 7.10.2005
By Nebez Goran, published in Hawlati in Kurdish on 27.Sep.2005. Translated with some changes by Dr Rebwar Fatah

Predicted uprising against the corruption of the Kurdish authorities of Southern Kurdistan and against their deviation from patriotism

You and the men around you have been pocketing our national wealth for 14 years. We did not complain or speak out because you are Kurds. For 14 seasons we have been sitting in front of the flame of paraffin lamps. Yet you laugh of the darkness that you have created around us. For 14 years you are in conflict and fought and we pay the price.

We spent 14 difficult seasons with you because we wanted Kurds to realise their delicate dreams. Anything that is not in your interest, you neither listen to nor care for, as if no one else matters in this homeland. That is enough. We have lost our patience. We no longer accept the division of our homeland between you; put the interest of yourself and your political groups above that of our coming generations. This time we will not just talk, we will flow into the streets and chant that you must put our Kurdish home in order or face the demolishment of your homes like those of our martyrs’, submerged in darkness. Either correct yourselves or face correction by the power of the streets.

You may ask: whose voices are those? Please listen. We are the voice of the genuine peshmerga who cannot reach even the shadow of your posts. We are the voice of the taxi driver who waits around the clock for two litres of fuel to keep his family going while you profit out of trading millions of litres. We are the voice of those mothers whose sons were killed in your lost conflicts and long await your empathy. We are the voice of workers who make it clear that what you do is neither patriotism nor leadership. We are the voice of students who studied under the light of paraffin lamps; and now graduated cannot secure employment without the approval of your political group.

We have lost our patience with you and are serving notice that you can no longer build your wealth on our bleeding society.

You may ask: who are we? We are the people who shall flood the streets in the coming days to demand the establishment of an authentic Kurdish homeland. We are those who for the sake of “Kurds” accepted all your ugliness and deceit. Are we traitors to demand our rights as citizens? Are we unjust if state that our lives are bleeding because of your injustices? We cannot continue putting our unhappy heads down. Instead of staying silent in our homes, we will spill out into the streets and call out. If you do not solve the corruption in both PUK and KDP administrations, we deny your right to call yourselves Kurds. To identify us, just look at the proof of your injustice.

Witness the tears we have not cried, the sighs we hold in, the wounds we bear all for the sake of our homeland. We are now ready to unleash our tears, scream our sighs, and expose our wounds. Before the people fume, before we carry our sledgehammers to smash your monuments, you better think again.

Key notes:
Anfal is the campaign of genocide carried out by the Baath authorities in 1987 in which an estimated 182 thousands Kurds perished.
14 years is reference to the length of the power of the Kurdish authorities, since 1991.
Peshmerga: Kurdish freedom fighter, not current Kurdish police.
Paraffin oil is reference for lack of electricity. The party and government officials have their own electricity.
There have been a number of protests in the Kurdish cities and town, including Raniye, Derbendixan, Kelar and Zaxo.
