Iraqi President Jalal
Talabani has urged the country's prime minister to
allow Saddam Hussein's half-brother to be released
for treatment in hospital.
Barzan al-Tikriti was on the US "most wanted" list
Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti is on trial with the
former Iraqi leader, accused of crimes against
humanity.
He has pleaded to be released for treatment for
spine cancer.
Mr Talabani called on Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari
to "use his authority and get citizen Barzan al-Tikriti
out of prison and send him to a hospital".
Mr Talabani "believes the new Iraq should be built
on humanitarian principles," his office said.
'Humanitarian case'
Captured in Baghdad in April 2003, Mr Barzan
appeared before an Iraqi court on 19 October along
with Saddam Hussein and six other aides at the
opening of their trial on charges of killing nearly
150 Shias in 1982. |

A former head of Iraq's feared intelligence service,
he said he could not receive proper treatment in
prison.
Last Friday saw a Dubai-based newspaper, Asharq al-Awsat,
issue an appeal made by him from his Baghdad prison.
"I beg President Bush, president of the United
States, in the name of justice, democratic
principles and human rights... to consider my
humanitarian case and order my release so I can have
access to the necessary treatment for this serious
illness," he said in the message.
He also appealed to Mr Talabani "in the name of the
friendship which binds us... to work to save the
life of a friend".
