Baghdad, 25 Oct.
(AKI) - Iraq's draft constitution has been approved
in the nationwide referendum. Some 78 percent of
those who turned out voted 'yes', while 21 percent
rejected it. On Monday it was revealed that the
charter had been rejected by two Sunni-dominated
provinces, but accepted in a third. Under the
referendum rules the charter would have failed if
two thirds of voters in three provinces voted 'no',
but election officials revealed that while most
voters in the Sunni-dominated Ninevah province voted
'no', they did not reach the two-thirds quota
needed.
The results were announced, after delays due to
recounts, in a news conference in Baghdad. The
turnout for the referendum was put at 63% and Fareed
Ayar from Iraq's Independent Electoral Commission
praised the people of Iraq for their courage in
voting, and said the referendum had been successful,
showing that "people in Iraq are serious in taking
part in the elections." Most Sunnis boycotted the
elections on January 30.
In many of the country's 18 provinces the
constitution was overwhelmingly accepted, with as
many as 95 and 96 percent voting 'yes' in the mostly
Shiite areas of Basra, Kerbala and Najaf. The
document was approved by 77 percent of voters in the
capital Baghdad and by 62 percent in the northern
city of Kirkuk.
