IRAQ
today announced a one-month extension of the
country's state of emergency, giving the Government
the right to impose curfews and restrict movement
around the country.
"The state of emergency will be extended 30 days
with the exception of Kurdistan, on the expiration
of the last decree promulgated on January 8," a
government statement read.
The text justified the renewal based on the "persistance"
of rebel activity in the run up to the country's
historic election.
The emergency law was first signed on November 7 for
60 days on the eve of the US assault on the former
rebel-stronghold of Fallujah.
Prime Minister Iyad Allawi renewed the restrictive
measures on January 6 as he looked to stamp out the
insurgents bent on marring the elections.
The law gives the prime minister the authority to
impose curfews, restrict travel between cities and
set up around-the-clock courts where the Government
can go to obtain arrest warrants.
