In these critical periods the Kurdish leadership has
gone in a very deep political hibernation.
These days are very critical for the future of
Kurdistan. It’s the time of political battle and
using all your tactics and strategies to get as much
as you can. There are only words and no deeds.
Lately there was a suggestion of returning Kirkuk
administration to Kurdistan’s regional government
except putting oil resources under the control of
central government.
I think it is the best deal Kurds ever will get. I
was always in favour of not relying the economy on
oil. Oil was and still a curse on the Kurdish
nation. Besides oil makes a nation lazy if you look
to the Arab Gulf states.
The best deal would be returning Kirkuk and all
surrounding areas back to the Kurdish region and
demand 20% only from Kirkuk’s oil revenues to
reconstruct Kirkuk governerate.
Having Kirkuk with all its oil back to Kurdistan is
almost impossible and it’s even better so. Other
reasons besides the ones I mentioned, the total
Kirkuk oil revenues if it become in the hands of
Kurdish government would only end up in the deep
pockets of some officials and nothing else. By
demanding the return of Kirkuk without its oil, will
dismiss all the allegations of neighbouring
countries and Arab population that the Kurds are
only after the oil of Kirkuk. Kurdistan is rich
enough with all kinds of resources. We are not in
need of this cursed oil. But we need Kirkuk, the
spring of our noble ancestry.
Kurdish nation is capable of establishing a modern
developed society in less than a decade. We have the
entrepreneurial spirit and are not hold by outdated
religious beliefs and complexities like our Arab
neighbours. So we have the Human resources beside a
huge natural resources that God has given to other
areas of Kurdistan.
The Kurdish leadership should be firm and stubborn
in the issue of Kirkuk. Turkey is not able anymore
to do any harm to Kurdistan because that would be a
blow to their holy quest for EU membership.
Besides USA too is not in a enviable position in
Iraq, So They can not afford losing the favour and
sympathy of Kurds who are the only group in Iraq
with no anti-American feelings. And the Kurdish
Peshmerga proved they are indispensable in their war
on insurgents.
So USA would not be able to say NO. The Arab central
government has almost no authority and is very weak,
so this is a golden chance for the Kurds to utilize.
Kurdish leadership should start the initiative and
not only having the role of spectator. Kurds should
start register all the Arab settlers brought by
Saddam., try to compensate them or even build houses
and farms for them in their areas of origin. That
would also ease the tension with the Arab
population.
