Turks Discuss Autonomy |
May 21, 2004: Turkish politicians, both ethnic
Turks and Kurds, are openly discussing the idea
of granting the Kurdish majority in parts of
eastern Turkey autonomy and recognition of their
Kurdish cultural identity. This would go against
decades of Turkish policy, but would recognize
Kurdish fears of bad treatment at the hands of
Arabs and Iranians. This concept is particularly
attractive to some five million Kurds in Iraq
(over three million), Iran (about a million) and
Syria. By serving as the "big brother" to the
Kurds, Turkey would reduce the anti-Turk
violence among its own twelve million Kurds and
secure it's billion dollar a year in business
with the Kurds of northern Iraq. There are still
several thousand armed PKK Kurdish rebels camped
out in remote areas of northern Iraq. Better
relations with the Iraqi Kurds would make it
easier to deal with the PKK. The PKK (the
Turkish Workers Party) has officially changed
its name to KONGRA-GEL (People’s Congress of
Kurdistan), but everyone still calls it the PKK.

May 22, 2004:
Syria is dealing with the recent unrest among
it's 200,000 (or two million, depending on
who provides the numbers) Kurds by diplomacy,
not force. Kurds in Syria have always been
restless, and in 1962 they all lost their Syrian
citizenship (on the grounds that they were
actually illegal immigrants from Iraq and
Turkey.) So 20,000 Syrian Kurds will be given
Syrian citizenship, in response to recent riots
by Syrian Kurds over ill treatment. Hundreds of
Kurds arrested in recent demonstrations have
been released from police custody. |

killed six PKK rebels.
May 6, 2004: In southeast Turkey, police killed
six PKK rebels over the last two days. Three PKK
men were killed when an anti-tank mine they were
planting near a bridge went off. A "village
guard" was killed when several PKK members fired
rockets at a Kurdish village. The Turkish
government still has 50,000 Kurdish civilians on
the payroll as armed guards in villages that, in
the past, had provided support for the PKK

شرطةَ ستّة ثوّارَ بي كْي كْي.
مايو/مايس 6, 2004: في جنوب شرق تركيا، قَتلتْ
شرطةَ ستّة ثوّارَ بي كْي كْي خلال اليومان
الماضية. ثلاثة رجالِ بي كْي كْي قُتِلوا عندما
لغمَ مضادّ للدباباتَ الذي هم كَانوا يَزْرعونَ
قُرْب a جسر إنفجروا. أي "حارس قريةِ" قُتِلَ
عندما أطلقَ عِدّة أعضاء بي كْي كْي الصواريخ في a
قرية كردية. الحكومة التركية ما زالَتْ لَها
