DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, July 27 (Reuters) - Two members
of the Turkish security forces were killed in a
clash with Kurdish guerrillas in a remote area of
southeast Turkey, a military source said on Tuesday.
Security forces, including members of a
state-sponsored village militia, engaged a group of
Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels late on Monday
in Bingol province.
One gendarme and a member of the village militia
were killed in the clash. Four village guards were
injured. An operation to track down the militants
was continuing, the source said.
The PKK launched an armed separatist campaign in
mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey in 1984 and more
than 30,000 people have been killed in the violence.
Fighting subsided after the capture in 1999 and then
conviction of rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan, who had
declared a unilateral ceasefire before his
detention, but it has flared again since June when
the guerrillas ended the truce.
