UTICA, N.Y. A Kurdish refugee who came to the
United States eight years ago and went on to
graduate from the SUNY Institute of Technology at
Utica/Rome has been killed in Iraq.
Ismail Zebari was working as an interpreter for U-S
forces.
SUNY I-T says the 28-year-old Zebari moved to
Binghamton with his parents and 13 younger brothers
and sisters in 1996, after spending five years in a
Kurdish refugee camp in Turkey.
Zebari earned a degree in civil engineering
technology in 2003 and became a U-S citizen. His
friends say he wanted to return to his native land
to make a difference. They are in shock over
Zebari's death.
The college says Zebari was killed outside Fallujah
on November 12th when his car was attacked by
insurgents.
