A man arrested in connection with the death of an
Iraqi Kurd refugee has been charged with his murder,
the police said today.
Kalan Kawa Karim, 29, died after an alleged street
assault in Swansea on September 6 in what police are
treating as a racially motivated attack.
Mr Karim, from the Hafod area, was taken to
Morriston Hospital, Swansea, but later died from his
injuries.
Two men were arrested in connection with the
incident on Friday and had been held by police since
then for questioning.
Police said today a 26-year-old local man has been
charged with the murder of Mr Karim and would appear
at Swansea Magistrates Court tomorrow.
The second man arrested last week has been released
on bail pending further inquiries.

Two more people have been arrested in connection
with the killing of an Iraqi Kurd refugee, police
said today.
Kalan Kawa Karim, 29, was attacked outside a pub in
Swansea in the early hours of September 6. He was
taken to hospital but died of his injuries soon
after.
South Wales Police today said two males – a
30-year-old man and a youth, both from the local
area – had been arrested and were helping with
inquiries.
A man appeared before the city’s magistrates
yesterday charged with the murder of Mr Karim.
Lee Mordecai, 26, from Swansea, south Wales, spoke
only to confirm his name and date of birth in the
brief hearing at Swansea Magistrates’ Court.
Dressed in a grey Nike sports shirt and trousers, he
told the court he was of no fixed address.
Mordecai was remanded in custody until September 24
when he will appear at Swansea Crown Court.
