Dear: Sirs/ Madams
Re.: Bringing Iraqi war criminals to justice
This Committee is established in October 2001 to
assist the Danish authorities in connection with
the investigation on the former Chef of Staff of
the Iraqi Military (General Nizar al-Khazraji) who
suspected for crimes against humanity. When he was
in charge of the 1st kops later on the Iraqi Army,
when 1st and 5th crops planed and carried out the
Anfal campaign in 1988, about 200,000 civilian
Kurds were disappeared or killed in this
operation, and another 5,000 when nerve and
mustard gas were dropped over the town of Halabja,
as well as more than 4,000 villages were
destroyed.
Since October 2001, the Danish authorities start
to perform very serious investigations on the
engagement of General Nizar al-Khazraji in Anfal
campaign and in the 8 phase’s operation carried
out from February till September 1988.
In the 19th of November 2002, the evidence seemed
to be enough to hold him on suspicion of war
crimes under the Geneva Conventions, and the judge
put him under house arrest.
Unfortunately the general fled Denmark on 17th of
March 2003. Despite the general’s disappearance,
the Danish government is forging ahead with the
investigations and they expecting the case to be
present in the court by end of 2003.
On the 25th April 2003 the Government and majority
of the Parliament criticised the responsible
Danish authorities for not securing the presence
of the General Nizar al-Khazrajil in Denmark,
including for not seeking a court order on his
pre-trial detention. Furthermore, the Parliament
underlined the importance of brining the General
to justice and requested relevant Danish
authorities to do their utmost in this regard. The
Danish state prosecutor for special international
crimes will continue to investigate the
allegations against General Nizar al-Khazrajil and
have asked Interpol for assistance.
The Committee appreciate your work, especially
regarding the crimes against humanity executed by
Saddam Hussein’s regime in the last 3 ducats.
The case of General Nizar al-Khazraji is a part of
Iraqi war crimes done by this regime, which should
be brought to justice, therefore we suggest this
cause be considered as a part of the evidences in
your works, which is the out come of more than 2
years investigation and interview of more than 130
witnesses.
Our aim is to bring all the Iraqi war criminals to
justice, and we are ready to assist your efforts.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Yours faithfully
The Campaign Committee to bring
Nizar al-Khazraji to Justice
