Regarding intelligence that an Iraqi resistance
group had ordered terrorist attacks on Korean troops
stationed in the northern Iraqi town of Irbil, it
has been revealed that two terrorist suspects were
recently arrested in the northern Iraqi town.
A government source said Thursday that information
had been conveyed to the Korean government through
diplomatic channels that two terrorist suspects
belonging to an Iraqi resistance group had been
arrested in downtown Irbil, no more than a few
kilometers from where Korea's Zaytun Unit is based.
The source said it appeared the two were not members
of the Ansar al-Sunna, which is known to have issued
instructions on Dec. 22 for car bomb attacks against
the Zaytun Unit. He also said several resistance
groups may have infiltrated the Irbil region, and
the Kurdistan Regional Government was preparing
countermeasures.
The Zaytun Unit is maintaining a threat evaluation
level of "amber," the source explained. The threat
evaluation system moves from green, the safest
level, to amber, red and black, which represents the
highest state of alert.
Ahead of this, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said on
Dec. 23 they had informed the Kurdistan Regional
Government that the leadership of the Sunni
resistance group Ansar al-Sunna had ordered its
operatives on Dec. 22 to carry out car bomb attacks
on Korean troops.
