DUBAI — The best Russian film of the last several years, the most successful Chinese martial arts movie in history, one of two acclaimed Iranian films and a groundbreaking German-Mongolian film will open at the Dubai International Film Festival today, organisers said yesterday.

The Return, a mysterious, intense Russian drama, won the top prizes at the Venice Film Festival last year, will be making its Middle East premiere in Dubai at 2.15pm at the Madinat Theatre.

The English-subtitled film revolves around two young brothers and their father, who makes an unexpected and unexplained return into their lives after a 12-year absence. Father and sons immediately set off on a fishing trip to a mysterious, bleak island, and eventually the expectant sons and fierce father clash.

Hero, the most successful film ever released in China, is also making its Middle East premiere today. The spectacular martial arts epic stars some of the biggest names in the industry — Jet Li, Maggie Cheung of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon fame, Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Zhang Yiyi — and is directed by the acclaimed Zhang Yimou, whose previous works include Raise the Red Lantern and Shanghai Triad. It will be shown at 12.30pm and 7pm at the Mercato 3 Cinema.

The Tear of the Cold, one of the most celebrated Iranian films of the year, will have its second and last screening at 6pm at Mercato Cinema 4. A tense, romantic epic set on the snowy border between Iran and Kurdistan, the film follows the love-hate story of a Kurdish shepherdess involved in the guerrilla resistance and a sensitive, skilled bomb-disposal expert from the Iranian military.

The Story of the Weeping Camel, a German documentary that grew out of a student project, follows a family of nomadic shepherds in the Gobi desert of Southern Mongolia and the extent they will go to care for their herd of camels. A darling of the critics, this is widely acclaimed to be a unique and surprisingly moving tale. It will make its Middle east premiere at 3.30pm at Mercato Cinema 3 and again at 12.30pm on December 11.

Also in the international film line-up for today are award-winning French film Comme Une Image (Look at Me), Filipino film Milan, Pakistani drama Silent Waters (Khamosh Pani), Bollywood cult classic Mr India, and Omar Sharif-starrer Doctor Zhivago. All the international films shown during the Festival are subtitled in English.
