TEHRAN (AFP)
-- Iraq's interim Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh
is expected to visit Iran today to prepare for an
official visit to the Islamic republic by Prime
Minister Iyad Allawi, the official Iranian news
agency IRNA said Thursday.
The report said Saleh -- an ethnic Kurd from the
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) -- had also
discussed the visit with Iran's charge d'affaires in
Iraq on Wednesday, and had promised that three IRNA
journalists apparently detained there would be
released before his trip.
IRNA's Baghdad bureau chief Mostafa Darban, and
colleagues Mohammad Khafaji and Mohsen Madani went
missing in Iraq on August 9. Tehran later said they
had been detained by Iraqi police.
Iraqi Vice President Ibrahim al-Jafari made a
surprise visit to Iran on Tuesday, at a time when
both sides are trying to mend fences after a certain
tension in the past two weeks.
No date has yet been set for a visit to Tehran by
Allawi, who has been officially invited by Iran.
