Editorial: A Colossal Mistake In Need Of Rectification Kurdistan Observer/Editorial , June 8, 2004

For months and years now, every decent and patriotic Kurd from east and west, north and south has urged Mr. Barzani and Talabani to unite and end their belligerent stance of having two little administrations overseeing two parts of Southern Kurdistan. But in the face of overwhelming support from Kurds, these leaders have maintained their procrastination and dangerous game of rivalry. As a consequence of the inability to unite behind one strong leader and direction, the disappointments are now pouring in, and soon any possible future gains that might have rightfully come to the Kurdish nation will be set back for generations. The burden of this failure lies squarely on the shoulders of Massoud Barzani and Jalal Talabani.

The opportunities came during the past year, but our leaders failed to grasp them. Blinded by their rivalry that is apparent even when just below the surface, they kept outbidding each other for favors given to anyone who seemed to be in a position of power. This has come at great cost to the interests of Southern Kurdistan. It was particularly odious of Mr. Talabani to take every opportunity to denigrate Southern Kurdistan by endearing himself to his Iraqi, Arab, Turkish, or American audience by suggesting that Kurds are willing to take the short end of the stick whenever possible from Kirkuk to the use of the Kurdish language in education.

And then came the colossal mistake when our two leaders went to Baghdad to set up shop in the capital of the evil country of Iraq that had brought, using our own economic resources, nothing but misery and genocide to the Kurds in a scale approaching those in Nazi Europe and barbaric Rwanda. Nevertheless, our Kurdish leaders decided that during the most tumultuous period of the region's history in a century, it was impossible to assert the collective will of the Kurdish people for independence and self-governance.

The consequences of going to Baghdad have enormously set back the aims of the Kurds. As legitimate sovereignty is returned to the hideously chauvinistic and racist Arab Iraq as insisted by ill-informed progressive Europe and the United Despotic Nations and acquiesced to by the Americans, serious obstacles will soon be set in stone in the noble path of the Kurdish struggle for freedom and liberty. Even now, with the token participation of the Kurds in positions of power in Iraq, any complaints by the people of Southern Kurdistan will be considered an internal affair matter of a sovereign Iraq, and no one will want to side with the Kurds. This is the result of the shortsighted vision of moderates such as Barham Salih and Hoshiar Zebari, who have the long view that freedom and prosperity will come to Southern Kurdistan through democratic reforms in Baghdad. Little did they realize that Arab Iraq is centuries away from the ideals that they learned about in London and Washington.

To be fair to Barzani and Talabani, they have accomplished enormous progress in a long and epic struggle, and in the past decade have moved Southern Kurdistan toward a secular self-governing civil society. In the war against the butcher of Baghdad, Kurds sacrificed more than any other US ally including Britain. Given the enormous suffering of the Kurds at the hands of evil Iraq, on many an occasion with the support and moral dwarfism of America, and given the sheer unparalleled bravery of the Kurdish peshmerga fighters willing to fight for the cause of freedom, our leaders would have been expected at the very least to hold the line that Southern Kurdistan including Kirkuk is one entity that will be recognized, and that it may or may not hold hands with its erstwhile enemy in Baghdad. Instead, Barzani and Talabani quickly fell into the American trap of thinking that they depend on America and not on the will of the Kurdish people. Did they forget that it was the will of the Kurdish people and its emboldened leaders that stared down the Turkish generals and caused them to think twice before entering Southern Kurdistan when the Americans were willing to trample on their Kurdish allies.

Alas, the Kurdish leaders seem to be living in the past, clinging to the old slogan of "democracy for Iraq and autonomy for Kurdistan". These slogans are no longer applicable to our world. However, as our leaders have wasted all of their efforts and energies over the past year into rebuilding evil Iraq, the Kurdish cause has suffered greatly. Kurds might accrue some short term benefits of small contracts if they cling to this anachronistic slogan, but they stand to lose enormous future economic, cultural, and political gains. Instead of making progress culturally toward the west, they have to move back toward to
the stale culture of the Arab-Islamic world. Instead of moving to liberate women, they will move back to the rigid and insane Arab-Islamic treatment of women as mindless creatures. Instead of moving to unify the Kurdish language to facilitate the emergence of Southern Kurdistan as the embryo of a resurrected Kurdistan, they will move back to filling the Kurdish language with Arabic and Islamic words that bring shame to the Kurds. This alone is a damning indictment against those moderates who think that moving to Baghdad is a good thing.

It is incomprehensible to any Kurdish patriot that someone like Zebari can with good conscience travel to New York and Washington, argue for full sovereignty for evil Iraq and not utter a word about the rights of Southern Kurdistan to self-determination. As he must realize, Iraq refers only to the Arab parts of what he believes to be Iraq. This is all too clear in the minds of the world and most importantly in the minds of the American policy makers, public, and media. Southern Kurdistan is a non-entity and a non-issue outside of Kurdistan at this point. These people see Iraq as Arab Iraq. Zebari is therefore not speaking on behalf of Arab Iraq and Southern Kurdistan. He is only speaking on behalf of Arab Iraq. Our leaders must have the greatest capacity for delayed gratification. The hope in vain that the world sees that Iraq is not just Arab. Then, they hope that Arab Iraq will quickly evolve and somehow turn into Canada with Southern Kurdistan enjoying the same freedoms as Quebec, and that Iraq will become a bilingual country. Even at its weakest point now, Arab Iraq is not interested in such aims. Does any one really believe that people of the ilk they have dealt with in Baghdad will ever turn into moderate Canadians. Arab Iraq lags behind Canada culturally and philosophically by four hundred years if not more.

Though well-intentioned, our leaders have committed a colossal mistake. Our only hope now is that the gravity of mistake is now apparent, and that they will thus realize that the time to act is now. The time to withdraw from Baghdad is now. The time to take Kirkuk and return displaced Kurds is now. Our leaders should return to Hewler, build a strong and unified government. Barzani and Talabani should certainly be able to agree to be President and Prime Minister of Southern Kurdistan. If not, they should step back and agree on one strong successor with the charisma to unite our people from east to west, north to south, and the will to act on the courage of the Kurdish peshmerga and people. With one united leading authority, strong negotiating skills, and the willingness to act, it might take the Kurds years more to gain their freedom and liberty. As part of Arab Iraq, it will take centuries more to accomplish what all Kurds yearn for now. The choice is clear.
