ANKARA (Reuters) -
President Bush pledged to work with Turkey and the
new Iraqi government against Turkish Kurd militants
in northern Iraq in an interview with Turkish
television aired Friday.
Bush was speaking ahead of a weekend trip to Turkey,
which blames Turkish Kurdish guerrillas in north
Iraq for recent cross-border attacks on security
forces in southeast Turkey. Bush is to attend a June
28-29 NATO summit in Istanbul.
The White House has said there will be no change to
his schedule despite Thursday's bomb blasts in
Ankara and Istanbul which killed four people and
injured at least 18 others.
The president told the NTV news channel the United
States was serious about tackling the Kurdistan
Workers Party (PKK), which is on the State
Department's list of "foreign terrorist
organizations."
"We will work together to deal with the PKK. We are
after terrorists. Once we declare a group a
terrorist group we mean it," Bush said.
"We will work with the governments. Both governments
by the way, the Turkish government and the new Iraqi
government," he said.
The PKK, which also uses the acronyms KADEK and
Kongra-Gel, began its armed campaign for an ethnic
homeland in 1984 and the conflict has claimed more
than 30,000 lives.
Fighting subsided after the 1999 capture of PKK
leader Abdullah Ocalan. However violence has flared
again since the rebels ended a unilateral six-year
cease-fire on June 1.
Separately, Bush said his much-vaunted Greater
Middle East Initiative was intended to express
backing for reformists in the region and was not a
call for Muslim countries to imitate the United
States.
He said Turkey was an anchor in the Muslim world
together with some other countries. "Turkey as a
Muslim country offers freedoms, opportunities and
hope," Bush said.
The United States has long held up Turkey, a secular
democracy with strong security and diplomatic ties
to the West and Israel, as a model for the rest of
the Muslim world.
