A gang fight broke out
outside a cafe used by asylum seekers in Coventry, a
court was told.
Security cameras captured most of the action, which
began when 20 white men marched towards the Kurdish
Cafe, Adelaide Street, Hillfields.
Broom handles, sticks, stones and brick ends were
used during the battle when several Iraqis inside
the cafe fought back.
Three men who joined in on both sides appeared
before Coventry Crown Court.
Hemin Suliman, 24, of Cromwell Street, Foleshill and
Christopher Brown, 33, of no fixed abode, each
admitted one charge of affray. Adnan Mohammed, 26,
of Tiverton Road, Birmingham, admitted violent
disorder.
Prosecutor Guy Spollen said: "None of these men were
original members of the 20 strong group which went
to the Kurdish Cafe on August 2 last year but they
all reacted and joined in."
Mohammed got a broom to defend himself and was seen
hitting somebody so hard that the broom head came
off.
Brown claimed he had only been in the area to attend
a Coventry City match. He told police the prices had
gone up and he had been heading home when he got
involved in the fight which, in his case, had not
been racially motivated.
Judge Daniel Pearce-Higgins ordered Mohammed to
serve 100 hours community punishment order combined
with a community rehabilitation order for a year.
Cooper and Suliman were each given a community
punishment orders of 150 hours and ordered to pay
£250 towards the prosecution costs.
