The way to remove Saddam from power.
10 years after the Gulf war Saddam is still on power, it is hard to say that he has lost the support and
popularity from his people. He has smartly turned the frustration from the public opinion in the country
towards the America and their allies, by blaming them for all sufferings of Iraq’s people.
The world has got to a non-turn situation on their struggles to dismantle Saddam, where they do not know
how to handle him. In the aftermath of terror attacks on USA, we have been more aware of risks for chemical and biological
weapons, in addition, the attempts of spreading the Anthrax bacteria.
Iraq is one of the countries with access both to biological and chemical weapons and even programs to
obtain access of nuclear weapons. The weapon inspectors succeeded to destroy some of these. It has
gone almost 6 years since these inspectors were last time were permitted entrance inside Iraq.
Observers believe that Saddam had time to restore these again. Various kinds of sanctions were implemented in recent
decades to weakening Saddams government, but they have been until now almost fruitless. You could say that
Saddams popularity is unaltered for not to say even higher then it was before the start of the Gulf war.
Today in the north part of Iraq is growing a start of a democratic and civil society, which is very decisive
to creating of democratic institutions and gradually a democratic government based on norms of democracy in
region and even neighboring countries.
During my visits to this area in summer 2001, I was supprized by the recently well rebuild infrastructures
compared with 1991which was totally devastated after backdrawel of the Saddams regime in the beginning of
1991.
Today they have their own governments, central banks, supreme courts, and all other democratic institutions
in their areas. Something that was inevitable during my time there, was the freedom and the regular people’s awareness and
talk of democracy, these were so tangible in their daily life. All these were unexpected extraordinary
and unbelievable scenes for me as a visitor from Europe after 10 years. This newly democratic oasis in the north could surely
turn the public opinion of the Iraqis from Saddam Hussein.
With the lesser financial aids from the UN, “988-oil for food program” has the Kurds been able to rebuild
their area in various sectors. The economy of the
Kurdish area is far better then the areas under
Saddams govern.
If west and America saw this excellent opportunity to
promote these democratic progresses made in Iraqi
Kurdistan, it could be catalysis for the rest of the
country to make some dramatic changes in the governing
of Iraq and replacement of Saddam.
America and their allies would not need to support the
Kurds and Kurdish area with weapon and military
equipment; it would be enough with financial and
long-term economic plans to show the Iraqi people,
what you can achieve with a democratic govern and
structure.
There is no doubt that Saddam could survive any longer
time. The Iraqi people would realize that this man is
nothing then just trouble for his own folk.
